Bicycle Safety for Kids & Families
Hosted by Lafayette Elementary School PTA
Saturday, April 11 • 11:00 AM–1:00 PM • Lafayette Elementary School Playground
Help children build the skills and confidence to ride on protected trails and cross intersections more safely. This hands-on course is based on the League of American Bicyclists’ Smart Cycling – Youth Skills curriculum.
This course is designed to help kids grow their independence while learning practical bike safety skills they can use on Lafayette’s protected trails and at intersections. Families will learn together, so parents can better support safe riding habits at home and around town.
-
While parents do not need to ride, they are required to be on premises during their child’s training course.
-
Basic bike handling and control
Safe scanning and signaling habits
Riding on shared or protected paths
Crossing intersections with more confidence
Riding with awareness around other trail users
-
A helmet is required to ride bicycles while attending the course. While there may be extra helmets available, we can’t promise there will be enough for every participant.
-
While there may be a balance bike area for children new to bicycling, the instructors will not be teaching kids to learn. We recommend watching this video for learning to ride a balance bike. Always wear a helmet!
