City of Lafayette Commissions & Committees
Volunteer your time to speak up for a better downtown, safer paths to walk and bike, and more dedicated community spaces. The city’s direction operates by volunteer commissions and committees made up of local residents. Time commitments and necessary skills vary by commission & committee.
Planning Commission
What is it?The front line of Lafayette’s growth decisions — reviews land use, housing, and development applications. If you care about how Lafayette grows while preserving its character, this is your seat at the table.
Transportation & Circulation
What is it?Advises on roads, bike lanes, pedestrian safety, and how people move through Lafayette. A prime spot for cycling advocates — especially with the new BART Bike Station and Downtown Pathways projects underway.
Parks, Trails, & Recreation
What is it?Oversees Lafayette’s parks, trail network, and recreation programs. Champions the outdoor lifestyle that makes this community special. Creates and manages the programs for youth and senior activities.
Design Review
The Brightline Project →
What is it?Keeps Lafayette beautiful. Reviews the aesthetics and physical appearance of new buildings and renovations, including downtown design guidelines. Perfect for architects, designers, or anyone with a strong visual sense of place.
Creeks
The Echo Project →
What is it?Stewards Lafayette’s beloved creek corridors — preservation, restoration, and responsible development. Great for nature lovers and environmental advocates. Their work is currently focused on bringing improved access to creeks that run through and underneath our downtown.
Environmental Task Force
What is it? Works on climate action, green business practices, single-use plastics ordinances, and building electrification. Partnered with Sustainable Lafayette and the Chamber — real policy impact on sustainability.
Public Art
What is it?Brings art into public spaces — murals, utility box art, gallery exhibitions, and calls for artists. Helps Lafayette feel culturally alive and distinctive.
Senior Services
What is it?Advocates for Lafayette’s aging residents — programs, transportation (Spirit Van!), and age-friendly planning. Vital for an inclusive community.
Emergency Preparedness
What is it?Coordinates wildfire readiness, CERT training, and disaster response planning. Critical given Lafayette’s fire risk — this work directly protects lives.
Youth Services
What is it?Champions programs and events for kids and teens. A great fit for parents, educators, and pediatric-minded community members.
